Sorghum Exports Increase Globally

sorghum-increaseCountries around the world are starting to recognize what China has known for some time now – the United States grows quality sorghum.

In the first four months of 2016, China has imported more than 5.9 million metric tons (232.3 million bushels) of U.S. sorghum but countries like Pakistan, Venezuela and Colombia are right behind; the four counties have imported a total of 295,000 tons (11.6 million bushels) so far this year.

In the past, Mexico led the way in importing U.S. sorghum, but has recently been replaced by China’s surge. Despite this, Mexico has still imported 320,400 tons (12.6 million bushels) so far this year.

The U.S. Grains Council and the United Sorghum Checkoff Program (USCP) continue to promote their crop through trade servicing efforts and market development work. This work is important so the council and USCP can continue to form relationships with buyers and end-users around the world.
