allAfrica.com: Uganda: Beer Makers Turn Sorghum Into Money Spinner

Once considered nothing more than a reliable cereal grain, in recent years however, it has quickly turned into an important money spinner. Up until the late 1990s sorghum was the third most important staple crop after maize and millet. All that changed after beer makers picked on the advantages of using locally sourced inputs. Not only are the sorghum-based brands popular among low-income earners, but the beer attracts half the excise tax of barley-made beers.
